Currency

The type of currency used in Thailand is called the baht. The baht can be found in the form of coins or paper depending on the desired amount. In one baht there are 100 satang. Coins can be 25 satang and 50 satang. There are also, coins that can be worth 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht and 10 baht. Coins may have Thai or Arabic numerals in scripted on them depending on the year of make. Newer coins will have both Thai and Arabic numerals on them, while the older ones just have the numbers. Paper money is also used in Thailand. Paper money comes in the amounts of 10   baht, 20 baht, 50 baht, 100 baht, 500 baht and 1000 baht. The 10 baht coin is more popular them the bill form so the 10 baht bill is uncommon .While in Thailand accessing your money though ATM’s is very easy because there a lot of ATM’s at tourist access.  In resort hotels or large cities credit cards are accepted. The currency conversion from Canadian dollars to Thai baht is 1 dollar to 31.16 baht. Thailand is not an expensive place to visit due to the foreign exchange rate.

Visa and Arrival Accommodations

Visa
Thailand allows foreigners from forty eight different counties, from around the world, with valid passports are allowed to enter the country without a updated visa. Canada is one of those countries. However this only applies to travelers that are only intending to stay in Thailand for less then thirty day visit. If you are staying are for more then thirty day you must apply for a visa. You may also go into neighboring countries immigration check points and stay there up to fifteen day before you have to return back to Thailand.  For people that are traveling to Thailand with out a visa must provide there own source on money. I am staying in Thailand for only one month so I don’t need a visa and am plainsong on bringing my own money!

Arrival Accommodation

When you are a budget traveler a five star hotel is usually not in your price range. Hotels may seem cheap at first but the bill can add up pretty quickly. An excellent alternative, to staying at a hotel could be staying at a hostel. A hostel is just like a hotel except you may have to share bed rooms and washrooms with strangers. Hostels are generally cheaper ,but you don’t get the privacy or conferred of a hotel room. The hostel I will be staying at is called the Khaosan Road Rainbow Hostel. This hostel is located in Thailand’s capital Bangkok. IT IS JUST OFF OF THE FAMOUS Khaosan road. The dorm room that I will be sharing with seven other people cost $5.06 Canadian and 158.350 in Thai Baht. I intend on staying for 30 days , July. 27th 2012 to August. 28th  2012, so I my total balance due at the end on that month will be $151.08 Canadian or 4,727.98 in Thai Baht. The Khaosan Road Rainbow Hostel has a lounge or reception area, dorms and restaurants. The food is not included. Other thing that come with the hostel are ,24 Hour Reception, Security, Air Conditioning, Bar, Cable TV , cafe , Card Phones, Fax Service, Free Internet Access, Linen Included, Lockers, Luggage Storage, Postal Service, for hire .A Bed with basic sheets and towels will be provided by the hostel. The overall rating for this hostel is 67%. This is determined by a costumers experience. The security was rated 67% staff was rated 78% and fun was rated 63%. Overall this hostel was had good rating and seem like a good place to stay for my trip.

This is a room at the hostel!

The list that follows is more information on the diseases.

For Diphtheria and Tetanus a booster is given to prevent contracting them

Diphtheria is a diseased caused by someone ingesting the bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The bacteria can grow on food or other foreign objects making it very dangerous. The Corynebacterium diphtheria courses black and thick fibers that cover various airway, affects the throat and nose . Tetanus is coused by a bacteria called clostridium tetani that affects the nervous system. This bacteria enters your body by entering a open wound. Once in your system the bacteria spread and create a  toxin called tetnospasmin. Tetnospasmin will attach to the spinal cords and muscles,  which block the nerves system signals, causing muscle spasims. These spasims can fracture the spine or tear muscles. Symptoms can start anywhere between 7 to 21 day of contracting this virus and these symptoms are drooling, hand or foot spasms, fever, defecation, trouble swallowing, and irritability.

There are not many immediately symptoms, but you may feel ill. After six months of having the disease you may have loss of appetite, fever, jaundice, vomiting, muscle aches and fatigue.

Culture Shock

There are many different types of cultures from all around the world that have their own different types of food, art, customs, religions and languages. I think it that being amerced different cultures for the first time will be a unique and amazing experience. Culture shock is what can happen to a person when traveling to different places. There are four different phases of culture shock. The first one is called the honeymoon phase. This is when the culture is beautiful and people find it fascinating. The next phase is called the negotiation phase. This phase is when you become depressed because you miss your old culture and this phase usually happens two to three weeks after arrival. Then the adjustment phase. In this phase everything it seeming familiar to you and everything appears normal because you have become use to the culture. This phase happens you traveler anywhere from six to twelve months after arrival. The fourth and final stage of culture shock is called the reverse culture shock, which is when you return back to your home country and go through the stages again to the culture in the that country. When traveling to Thailand I expect to go through the honeymoon, negotiation and part of the adjustment phase because of how long I’m planning on staying there. The thing that I know will shock me the most will be the currency. Most people would not necessarily find this a big culture shock, but I know that I would. I have only ever used Canadian money to buy products sold in Canada. Buying something in a different currency will “shock” me because I don’t think I will actually understand what the value is. I also think I will have trouble with counting out the specific amount of money I need to give to waiters or cashiers because the money is so different. To prepare for using money in Thailand I would read about the money and currency values and memorize what each coin represents and what it’s worth. I think I would also bring off a piece of paper with me that had the money values on it (kinda like a cheat sheet) just to make sure that I know I’m paying the right amount of money. Another thing that would be a big culture shock for me would be the food. I have been to Thai restaurants before and the food was great. However in the Thai restaurant I’ve been to they have never served insects as an appetizer. In Thailand eating insects is like a common snack. Insects are usually fried in a wok and can be server hot or cold. One of the most common insects are called Jing Leed, which are similar to crickets.  Other bugs that are eaten are Maeng Kee Noon, Non Mai, non pai, Tak Ga Tan, and Maeng Da. I that I can’t really prepare for this. I would absolutely want to eat some insects while in Thailand bust I guess I’ll just mentally prepare for it a couple of moments before eating.

Climate

When staying in Thailand in the months of July and August I will expect the weather to be full of rain because this is the time of the year that monsoons come from the Indian ocean are. The air from the monsoons are is very hot and humid. A lot of clouds form in these temperature creating rainfall.  From the month June to September receive the least amount of sunshine. In the summer months daylight is only around for approximately five to six hours a day. The hours that sunlight shows in the rest of the year is nine o ten hours a day.  By knowing this information about the weather in Thailand I will know to pack a rain jacket and maybe even a pair of rain boots. I think I will also pack cloths that I’d wear in the summer due to the high humidity.

Travel Motivators and Barriers

Travel Barriers

Maeng Kee Noon, Non Mai, Non pai, Tak Ga Tan, and Maeng Da or known in Canada as beetles, maggots and and cock roach are a common snack in Thailand. Yes you read this correctly this is a common snack! To some people this may sound like a stunt on fear factor, but it’s actually quite common. Some people may have this as a travel barrier because they find eating bug “weird” . This may also be a travel barrier to some people because a lot of people are scared of insects. Entomophobia what the fear of insects is called and a lot of people are scared of bugs. Thai food in general is very spicy and some people would not like eating spicy food so that may be a barrier.

Travel Motivators

Ride in a Tuk Tuk, Visit Thi Lo Su waterfall, Take a boat to Koh Hong, Tour Khao Yai National park, visit the Floating Market, Tour Wat Pho and see the Visit Wat Arun or even the Chao Phraya River. There are so many wonderful things to do and see in Thailand and the real question is why wouldn’t you go?... besides the travel barrier paragraph.

Attractions

Biophysical Attractions

The Thi Lo Su Waterfall

The biggest waterfall in Thailand is called the Thi Lo Su water fall and is located just outside of the village of Umphang. The water fall is 180 meters high and 300 meters wide at it’s fullest. The Thi Lo Su waterfall also has different water falls branching in and out of it making it even more spectacular. People can raft close to the fall. Tours are available for tourist that don’t nesasarly want to get in a boat or wet ,but still want to take pictures. There is a part of the of the fall that it is relatively safe to swim in for the adventurous souls.

Koh Hong

Koh Hong is part of a collection of island that that is located just north of the city of Krabi. The island of Koh Hong is known as the room island because of a large eroded cave in the center of the island.  During the high tide boats can pass over the cave and enter the “room”. The beach on the Koh Hong is called the Pelay beach. This beach is covered in very find white sand. In the water you can a lot of indigenous fish and various types of coral. Another type of animal you may see on this beach are bird. A lot of young men collect bird nest on this island for ingredience for bird nest soup. The men use long bamboo polls to try and capture these nests. Surrounding the beach is large limestone rock formations. This is a hedge tourist attraction and a perfect place to take the family to swim. You can get to Koh Hong island by a boat. You have to depart from the city of Ao Nang and that’s how you get there.

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang

Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are two different coral sites that people go scuba diving. These are located outside of the Similan Islands.  The Hin daeng is also known as red rock due to the radiant shapes of red that come from the rocks and coral. A lot of small fish and other sea creature live in the rock and coral so if you pay close attention you can see little fish and other wild life living there as well. Hin Mauang are the dive sites that are home to rocks and coral that are purple. Hin Muang is also known as purple rock. In Hin Mauang you will find Thailand highest vertical wall in the water. This wall of rock and coral is covered with different shades and patterns of purple. This was is 60 meters. Both of these dive sites show wonderful colors and different unique wild life.

Khao Yai National Park

The oldest and most reserved national park in Thailand is called the, Khao Yai National Park. There are many different types of vegetation zones in this national park such as, the savannah, evergreen rainforest, semi-evergreen forest, the mixed deciduous forest and the hill evergreen forest. Due to it’s vast range in different climates and vegetation many different species of wild life and plants live in this park making it so unique, and beautiful.

Cultural Attractions

Floating Market

The floating market is one of the main reasons I want to go to Thailand! A floating market is just like your everyday flee market except you’re on a boat. Damnoen Saduak is the most famous floating market in Thailand and is only approximately 100 km south of Thailand. At these markets things are bought, sold and bartered. Items such as fruit, vegetables, grains, meats are sold here. Other objects such as hats and shoes are also sold at these markets. Thin canoes like boat twist and travel there was through this somewhat cyanotic market.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho or also refered to as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is a temple for the religion Buddhism. This Buddhist temple is the largest and oldest in Bangkok and has the largest buddah statue in Thailand. The statue has Is covered in gold and is decorated with mother-of-parl inlay. It has more then 1,000 Buddha images. Before the temple was built the grounds were used for education and traditional Thai medicine. In this temple there are two major wall compounds. The first compound is (facing south north) is by sanamchi and the second compound has relining buddah school. The cost of touring this temple is only 20 baht.

Wat Arun

Another temple that I am planning on visiting is called the Wat Arun. This is a temple also located in Bangkok and is just off of the Chao Phraya river. This Buddhist temple is also known as the “Temple of the Dawn”, but was originally known as the olive temple. The famous King Taksin, changed his name to Wat chaeng so that his name could match the temples. Over all this is a beautiful landmark that everyone traveling here should visit.

 Chao Phraya River

The Chao Phraya River is a historical boat tour that travels along the coast on old Bangkok. The tour starts in Sathorn and travel along the famous Oriental hotel built in 1965. The tour takes you up river and passes the holy Rosary church built in 1786 and Saim Commertial Bank. Then next on the tour is the first embassy built in Thailand. The Portuguese embacy was built in the sixteenth century. In this tour you will also see the ,Phra Pok Klao Bridge, , Santa Cruz Church, Wat Kanlayanamit, Fort Vichai Prasit, Wat Arun or the the Temple of Dawn and finally ending off at Wat Rakhang.
